The Vault
Inspired by Max Ernst’s picture book, The Hundred Headless Women, Ed Rankus's She Heard Voices is a cult classic of experimental silent video (super rarity: video art sans sound). A collage of Surrealist motifs, the oblique b&w film is structured as an abstract “fractured fairy tale” featuring a heroine threatened by a psychic usurper. The predatory telephone empowers disembodied voices, all unheard and implied, authorizing their faceless demands. (1986, 10 min, b&w, silent)
