December 6 - 10, 2023
Booth C13, Miami Beach Convention Center
At Art Basel Miami Beach 2023, Corbett vs. Dempsey is pleased to feature a selection of works by seven gallery artists, roughly divided hemispherically, with one side concentrating on abstraction, the other on figuration. In the figurative realm, the booth will present three major new paintings by Celeste Rapone. Based in Chicago, Rapone is a figurative painter whose complex (sometimes convex) compositional sensibility and daring color choices reveal a deeply humanistic and often humorous approach to urban and suburban life. On the opposite side of the booth, the spotlight is on Rebecca Morris, two large-scale canvases hearkening to the L.A. artist’s 21-year survey currently on view at the MCA Chicago. A group of small and medium-sized abstract paintings, all vivid and teeming with ideas, by Molly Zuckerman-Hartung occupies an adjacent wall, while an explosively colorful portrait by Brian Calvin and a richly symbolic Omar Velázquez painting will be accompanied by two Magalie Guérin glazed ceramics and a free-standing sculpture by Diane Simpson. Each of these works explores its own unique approach to figuration and representation. Simpson’s sculpture is at once figurative and abstract – an abstracted figure – suggesting a rapprochement between the two hypothetically exclusive (but in fact continuous) fields.
