A ceaselessly exploratory interdisciplinary artist, composer and trans-media multi-instrumentalist Hunsinger performs with Eastern and Western oboes, fiddle, saxophones, Irish whistles, vocals, live loops, reactive visuals, field recordings, micro-controlled motors and hacked game controllers. Born in Florida, raised in Atlanta, Hunsinger was based in Chicago for nearly two decades, where she was a key figure in the '90s improvised music scene. Hunsinger relocated to Nashville in 2007 and returned to the Windy City earlier this year. Conservatory trained as an oboist, she has toured as a classical and new music instrumentalist with a career that includes concerts and international stints with the Atlanta Symphony and the Chicago Symphony. Hunsinger also has a rich history in improvised music, having worked with a wide range of free music figures. Among her collaborations are Bought/Broken, a virtual reality experience for survivors of intimate partner abuse featured in New York City’s “16 Days to Stop Gender Violence“ initiative, and “Whistle, Two Ready,” a permanent interactive music and light installation at Nashville’s Mill Ridge Park by Montreal’s Daily Tous Les Jours.
Hunsinger's record Trio (Melugeon, 2003), with Tatsu Aoki and the late Art Ensemble of Chicago co-founder Joseph Jarman, was awarded four stars from DownBeat magazine. Her current projects include solo multimedia performance suites, duets with Tim Daisy, Tatsu Aoki and Ethan Jodziewicz, and a trio with Mike Khoury and Michael Zerang. An avid conservationist and activist, Hunsinger founded the Chicago Bird Collision Monitors, one of the largest and most successful migratory bird rescue and advocacy groups in the country.
At CvsD, Hunsinger will be performing on Ableton hardware with a Push controller, pedal, and laptop for live sampling and looping, and she plans to play oboe, Indian shenai, Chinese suona, alto and soprano sax, Irish whistles, Jhorn, and fiddle.
