Paul Steinbeck
Saturday, March 4, 2023, 2pm
A standout among the new wave of critical writers working on creative music, Paul Steinbeck has applied his attentive and insightful ears to the recorded legacy of Chicago's own Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians in his essential new book Sound Experiments: The Music of the AACM (University of Chicago Press, 2022). The book digs deeply into specific works by Muhal Richard Abrams, Roscoe Mitchell, Anthony Braxton, George Lewis, Wadada Leo Smith, Henry Threadgill, Nicole Mitchell, Mike Reed, and Tomeka Reid. Steinbeck will read from his new book and discuss it, as well as Message to Our Folks, his study of the Art Ensemble of Chicago, with John Corbett in the context of Art Ensemble founding member Roscoe Mitchell's exhibition Keeper of the Code: Paintings 1963-2022.
