Corbett vs. Dempsey is honored to present a solo concert by Damon Locks.
Musician, writer, bandleader, visual artist, teacher, experimentalist – Damon Locks is one of the great polymaths of contemporary Chicago culture. He emerged in the postpunk guise of Trenchmouth in the 1980s, spread his wings with the Eternals, has expanded his vision with Black Monument Ensemble and stripped it back down for intimate improvised dialogues with Rob Mazurek, Ken Vandermark, Didi Kern, and others, all the while, at core, maintaining and sharpening the practice that led to his solo debut, 3D Sonic Adventure (Recording Device, 2024). With a highly personal approach to sampling that has valued speech and the rhythms of language as much as musical fragments, Locks creates dense mixes of sound, sometimes sporting his own voice and words, often featuring recordings from the span of African American oral history. Omnipresent in his approach is a spirit of genuineness, the same from-the-root feeling that drives the warmest and most heartfelt dub and hip-hop. Each performance is its own adventure. Come join us for this one.
