Corbett vs. Dempsey is delighted to present "They're so nice..." by Russell Lee Fine. Compiling 99 black and white photographs from the 1980s, designed to reveal the emotional impact of each image, the hardback book constitutes a tranche cut from Fine's deep cache of musician photos, which is focused on jazz and improvised music. Among them are images Fine took of concerts that he organized as a college student in Providence, Rhode Island, as well as photos he produced on assignment for music magazines. Previously unseen action shots of Elvin Jones, The Art Ensemble of Chicago, the Sun Ra Arkestra (including the greatest photo of Marshall Allen ever snapped), Sarah Vaughan, and Peter Brötzmann, and formal portraits of Don Cherry, Derek Bailey, Billy Bang, and Cecil Taylor are thoughtfully montaged into a panoramic view of a crucial decade in the evolution of creative music.
