JUBG Space (Cologne) and Corbett vs. Dempsey (Chicago) are pleased to join forces for a joint booth at Art Cologne 2024. The galleries will present three artists: Hedwig Eberle, Roscoe Mitchell, and Matthias Schaufler. Eberle and Schaufler have both shown in Chicago with CvsD; this will be Mitchell's first exhibition in Germany.

These painters come from distinct backgrounds. Schaufler (b. 1964) and Eberle (b. 1977) are German, based in Germany, and their work has a certain rough affinity – expressionistic and painterly, with an undercurrent of the corporeal, the paintings featuring whipping lines and soft forms, and they don't shy away from murkier overlays and earthen or fleshy tonalities. Both artists interrogate the medium of painting from the inside out, their images a kind of haunted figuration, full body (Schafuler) or facial (Eberle), that implies as much as it states. Mitchell (b. 1940), on the contrary, utilizes the most highkey color palette imaginable and composes images that merge abstraction and figuration along a sharper line, invoking African masks and textiles, totemic imagery, Aboriginal dot paintings, and Op Art. One of the most prominent contemporary experimental musicians and composers, Mitchell has been a painter since he co-founded the Art Ensemble of Chicago in the mid-1960s, but he's only recently, as an octogenarian, begun exhibiting his visual art.

JUBG Space and CvsD are pleased to make a charmed circle for these strange bedfellows.
