Francis Chapin (1899 - 1965)

works by Francis Chapin

Francis Chapin was one of the most influential painters in the history of Chicago artmaking. He graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1928, and he stayed at SAIC as a prominent teacher for the following 15 years. An outstanding colorist - Ramon Shiva developed a famous set of "Chapin greys" for him - Chapin was greatly admired for his watercolors and his oils, and his American scene style, which incorporated delicate elements of French postimpressionism, was widely emulated.
